Artsapalooza takes over First Friday in September

It’s all about the arts as First Friday presents “Artsapalooza” in September.

From hands-on art projects to art exhibits to art sales, you’ll find it all from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, in downtown Kokomo.

A highlight of the evening will be the opening of the 2017-18 exhibit in Artists Alley located next to Artworks Gallery.

Inside Artworks Gallery, check out the work of Rona Schwartz, winner of the Kokomo Art Association’s Photography Show, and hear live music from pianist Meta Hume. Also, the gallery will host an artists’ garage sale where you can shop for new and used art and craft supplies from artists who are wanting to clear out their studios.

Bohemian Tattoo Club is looking to make its largest art fusion to date. The piece will celebrate the spirit of unity and thus they invite all First Friday visitors to participate in the creation of the piece.

“Haight Street Rat,” an authentic Banksy, is still on display at Kokomo-Howard County Public Library. The library is open an extra hour for First Fridays, giving you more time to see the artwork attracting a lot of attention in Kokomo.

You’ll find even more art at 365 Balance, where they will be hosting local artists for a showcase and sell. There will be nearly 20 artists from glass etchers, jewelry makers, painters, furniture makers and more. Also, Beth Rakestraw will have Matilda Jane clothing. In their dance studio, there will be a free hip hop class from 6 to 7 p.m. and a free yoga class from 7 to 7:30. If you sign up for classes during the First Friday event, you will receive $10 off September tuition.

CASA of Howard County will have inspirational rocks that can be painted and hidden in the Courthouse landscape or taken with them.

The Coterie will host a performance by a local jazz trio, The Pick Ups, starting at 8 p.m.

The Excel Center students and staff will share their many talents in spoken and visual arts, including caricatures and name art. At Indiana University Kokomo’s Union Street Gallery, new exhibits will open — “Connected Foundations” and “Field.” Also, learn how to print your own woodblock print designed by IU Kokomo Alumni artist Nicole Ingalls.
