First Friday Artsapalooza celebrates the arts in downtown Kokomo

Celebrate the arts in downtown Kokomo with First Friday Artsapalooza.

This event, taking place Friday, September 4, will feature a new art exhibit, a birthday celebration for Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore, a dance party and a “Movie with the Mayor” at Municipal Stadium.

From 5:30 to 7 p.m., the community is welcome to enjoy refreshments at the grand opening of the new exhibit in Artist Alley, featuring 16 new pieces on display. The pieces, made of various media including acrylic and stone, will be on display for the next year in the alley next to Artworks Gallery. The artists will speak about their pieces and the creative process starting at 6 p.m.

“Within this year’s exhibit we have several social statement pieces, as well as many simply beautifully colorful art pieces.  The exhibits just seem to get better every year,” explained Susan Alexander, manager of the Greater Kokomo Downtown Association. The outdoor gallery has now been open since 2014 and will show its 7th exhibit this year.

In addition to the grand opening of the exhibit, the community is encouraged to stay and help celebrate Mayor Moore’s 50th birthday, with cake served at 6:15 p.m. Moore, an avid Star Wars fan, then invites the community to enjoy a movie at Municipal Stadium later that evening. Stadium gates open at 7:30pm and the movie will begin at 8pm. Guests are encouraged to wear their costumes from a “Galaxy, far, far away”, says Susan Alexander.

Taking place just down the street from Artist Alley, First Friday visitors can find an improv dance party at Rain Garden Plaza, across the street from Jamie’s Soda Fountain. The dance group will consist of volunteers, and community members are encouraged to step in as the dance coach, leading the group in improv dance routines.

Throughout the event, downtown businesses and vendors will offer specials and activities. Kokomo Olive will welcome guests to South Main Street, where visitors can find art, music and more. On North Buckeye Street, Muse Underground will host a tie dye party with face painting, outdoor Pictionary and work from local artists on display. In addition, Art School Rejects, just above Muse Underground, will showcase their art and music for guests throughout the evening.

First Friday takes place on the first Friday of each month from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Stay tuned for more details on Facebook at First Friday Kokomo.
