First Friday is kick-off to new sculpture walk

The art movement in downtown Kokomo continues to grow, with the Kokomo Sculpture Walk opening April 5.

A partnership between the Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance and the City of Kokomo, the Kokomo Sculpture Walk is an outdoor exhibit featuring nine large-scale sculptures along beautiful downtown trails and waterways.

A steel sculpture titled “Everything,” the first piece was installed Wednesday, March 20, near Mulberry and Buckeye streets. In the next two weeks, all nine pieces were installed on 8 foot by 8 foot concrete bases. The exhibit stretches from Madison Street to the Wildcat Creek along the Industrial Heritage Trail and from 306 Riverfront District to Apperson Way along the Walk of Excellence Trail.

  • The grand opening of The Market Store at 119 W. Sycamore St. Created by the same vendors that bring you the Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market every summer, The Market Store will be open from 5:30 to 9 p.m. during First Friday activities, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturdays.
  • The Cellar Bar will be hosting a wine tasting event with Vino wines in the banquet room beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 and will include snacks. The Cellar Bar is located at 113 E. Sycamore St.
  • American Dream Hi Fi, located at 109 E. Sycamore St., will host an all-ages concert featuring X-Ray Mary and Target Acquired beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
  • Join the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library for an egg-ceptional Easter egg hunt during First Friday. The event is for children from birth to 8 years old and will begin at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch downtown.
  • Put on your dancing shoes and head on down to The Refinery on Superior Street just across from Foster Park. The business will host swing, Latin and ballroom dancing beginning at 7 p.m. and no dance experience is required.
  • Who’s Yer Coustic  will perform at Wings Etc. beginning at 6 p.m. This month, the band will have Brian and Chiquita Blunt along with Troy Sparks and special guest Jimmy Wright. Wings Etc. is located at 113 E. Sycamore St.
  • There will be an opening reception for the “Upbringing” exhibit, curated by IUK intern Alyson Davis Williams, at the IU Kokomo Downtown Gallery, located at 102 N. Main St. From 5:30 to 9 p.m., guests can explore the experiences of nurturing a child and the emotions that come with that journey.
  • Paint your own ceramic tiles at Fired Arts Studio from 5 to 9 p.m. Each 4-inch tile is $5, and Fired Arts will have pre-printed designs you can color in or you can create your own unique design. No reservations are required.
