First Friday presents Monster Mash!

Halloween will come early to downtown Kokomo as First Friday presents Monster Mash on Friday, Oct. 5.

Always a highly anticipated evening, Monster Mash will be packed with festive Halloween-inspired happenings and much more from 5:30 to 9 p.m. throughout the downtown area.

A few highlights of the evening will include a Halloween-themed performance by Dance Elite. Decked out in full costumes, the dancers will perform on the west side of the Courthouse Square. The performance will be followed by Split Sole Cloggers.

From 6 to 9 p.m., on the eastside of the courthouse, Sound of Music will present a Rock Star Academy Band concert. Bands featuring classic to contemporary rock music will perform about 45 minutes each.

Get your Halloween costume ready early as many businesses and organizations will be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.

These happenings are just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s a listing of what’s planned for First Friday October:

• Join the Greater Kokomo Downtown Association and the Kokomo Art Association as they celebrate the opening of the 2018-19 exhibit in Artist Alley, located next to Artworks Gallery. You can view the new artwork on display and meet the artists who created them during an opening reception starting at 5:30 p.m. This year’s exhibit features 17 large-scale paintings and mixed-media art pieces and two stone sculptures from local and regional artists.

• At Bohemian Tattoo Club, watch as a talented artist carves a pumpkin. Also, there will be candy bars for the kids and beer and wine for the parents.

• It will be all things Frankenstein at the Kokomo Howard County Public Library. Come dressed as Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s monster or the Monster Bride and enter a costume contest on Facebook. There will be cupcakes and a make-your-own-monster craft for teens and adults and a FrankenMask Craft for kids. Fun games will include Frankenstein Nose Pick, Frankenstein Ping Pong, Decapitated Limb Ring Toss, Frankenstein Needs a Brain Toss, and Zombie Head Bowling.

• Local abstract expressionist Greg Seagrave will exhibit his art in the library’s main gallery.

• Bona Vista Programs’ downtown gift store will have free face-painting and new fall items available for purchase.

• Lakewood Family Dental will have finger painting and coloring areas for children, and the Tooth Fairy will be available for pictures. They will also be giving away toothpaste and toothbrushes.

• Literacy Coalition of Howard County will celebrate its 30th anniversary with dancing in the streets. They will also have free books for children, kids’ activities, mascots and popcorn.

• The staff of Meadows Medical Center will be dressed as the Incredibles and pose for pictures with visitors. There will also be candy and a chance to paint a message rock.

• The Kokomo Family YMCA will have hay bale bowling for kids and candy for trick-or-treaters.

• Edge of Insanity will have costumed characters handing out candy and discount tickets for its haunted attraction that raises money for charity.

• Grab a taste of fall at the Kokomo Confectioners Co. with pumpkin sweets and other fall favorites. They’ll also have cat and dog treats and a pet adoption event.

• Cook McDoogal’s will host its monthly Cooky’s Cruise In on the Courthouse Square. The cruise-in is open to all types of vehicles and will feature vehicles from the Kokomo Automotive Museum’s collection.

• LeaderOne Financial will host brothers Henly and Ethan Page. Longtime students of Rhum Academy of Music, the brothers will perform a variety of covers and original music.

• The IU Kokomo Downtown Gallery will have its Midwestern Photography Exhibition on display and a printstallation from IU Kokomo’s advanced printmaking students.

• Thermodyn will have a touch and feel mystery box as well as art supplies to create a spooky Halloween drawing.

• PF Hendricks & Co. will have candy for trick-or-treaters and a selfie contest.

• First Baptist Church will have free hot dogs for everyone.

• Community Howard Regional Health’s Community Care Mobile will be parked on the Courthouse Square offering free health screenings and tips on how to stay healthy. The first 65 adult visitors to the care mobile will receive a free flu vaccine.

• Crossroads North Kokomo will celebrate the opening of its new downtown services and office location with a bounce house and inflatable obstacle course in front of its new satellite office at 104 N. Main St. They’ll host Flawless, a new local girls’ ministry.

• Ellers Mortuary & Cremation Center will have a photo booth, a pumpkin punch game and a pumpkin raffle.

• CASA of Howard County will have Frisbees and candy, as well as information about how to become a CASA volunteer.

• Visit the Tucker Rouch State Farm booth and give the prize wheel a spin.

• Who’s Yer Coustic will perform at Wing’s Etc. If weather permits, the band will perform in the alleyway next to the restaurant. Otherwise, they’ll perform inside the downtown eatery.

• The Committee to Elect Debbie Stewart will pass out balloons, trick-or-treat bags and popcorn, as well as literature on the candidate for Howard County clerk.
